Unlock PDF

Remove the security password from your PDF

Unlock a PDF whose password you know: type it once and download a copy that opens without a password, with its printing, copying and editing restrictions removed. It helps when a file you use often asks for the password every time, or before you edit, sign or merge a protected document.

Unlocking happens on the ProPDF server: the file and the password are sent over HTTPS to AWS in the Paris region (eu-west-3), processed, then deleted as soon as the task ends. The password serves only to open the file and is not logged. Files up to 4 MB are accepted, and the result is a new file named with _unlocked, such as statement_unlocked.pdf.

The tool needs the correct password. If you do not know it, this tool cannot help you: it only opens files whose password you type.

How to unlock a PDF

  1. Open the protected PDF Drop it on the area marked Drop your protected PDF here, or click to choose it. The file name and size appear once it is loaded.

  2. Type the password Enter the current password of the file. The eye icon shows the characters so you can check them.

  3. Unlock and download Press Unlock and download. With the right password, the _unlocked copy downloads and the "File ready" panel appears.

  4. Keep working if needed Send the unlocked copy to Compress, Edit, Sign or Merge from the "File ready" panel, without choosing the file again.

What the unlocked copy looks like

The copy is saved without encryption. It opens without a password prompt, and restrictions that came with the protection, such as blocked printing or copying, are gone.

Only the protection changes. The pages, their text and their images are the same as in the protected file.

Your protected original stays as it was on your device. Since anyone can open the unlocked copy, delete it once you no longer need it.

When unlocking fails

  • The Unlock and download button stays disabled: the password field is empty. Type the password first.
  • File is too large: the limit is 4 MB.
  • Too many requests, or The request timed out: wait a moment, then try again.
  • The tool handles standard password encryption, including AES-256. Files encrypted for specific people with digital certificates, rather than with a password, are not supported.

Changing a password instead of removing it

To replace a password, unlock the file here, then open the unlocked copy in Protect and set the new one. Protect encrypts it with AES-256, and the old password no longer opens the new copy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I unlock a PDF without the password?

No. Without the correct password there is nothing this tool can do. If you have lost it, ask the person who created or sent the file.

Which files may I unlock?

Files you are entitled to open, such as your own documents or files whose password someone gave you.

Does unlocking remove printing and copying restrictions?

Yes, once the file opens with the password you type: the copy is saved without any encryption, so the restrictions go away with it. If the file opens without a password but blocks printing or copying, you need the permissions password its author set; any other password is refused.

Why do I get the Wrong password message?

The password you typed did not open the file. Passwords are case-sensitive, so check caps lock and the keyboard layout, show the characters with the eye icon, and try again.

How long do my file and password stay on the server?

Only while the task runs. The server opens the file with your password and sends back the unlocked copy, then both files are deleted as soon as the task ends. The password is not logged.

How large can the file be?

4 MB per file, the ceiling for the tools that run on the server. Unlocking needs no account and has no daily quota or usage counter.
