About ProPDF
Free online PDF tools for everyone: no account, no watermark, nothing to install.
What ProPDF is
ProPDF is a website with 21 free PDF tools. You open a tool, add your file, choose the options and download the result: there is no account to create, no subscription and nothing to install, and no watermark is added to your documents.
Each tool does one job, such as merging files, converting a Word document or adding page numbers. Most PDF results can be passed straight to another tool in the same browser session, for example to compress a file you have just merged.
The 21 tools
The tools are grouped in five categories, the same ones you can filter on the home page. Four of them are focused versions of another tool: Rotate PDF and Delete PDF Pages use the Organize engine, Extract PDF Pages uses Split, and PDF to PNG is PDF to JPG with PNG selected by default.
- Organize: Merge PDF, Split a PDF, Organize PDF, Rotate PDF, Delete PDF Pages, Extract PDF Pages and Compare PDF.
- Optimize: Compress a PDF.
- Convert: PDF to Word, Word to PDF, PDF to JPG, PDF to PNG and JPG to PDF.
- Edit: Edit PDF, Sign PDF, Add a watermark, Page numbers and Chat with PDF.
- Security: Redact PDF, Protect PDF and Unlock PDF.
Where your files are processed
Of the 21 tools, 13 do all their work in your browser, using open-source libraries loaded with the page: Merge, Split, Organize, Rotate, Delete Pages, Extract Pages, PDF to JPG, PDF to PNG, JPG to PDF, Watermark, Page Numbers, Sign and Compare. Your file is read and processed on your own device, and it is not sent anywhere.
The other 8 tools need a server: Compress, PDF to Word, Word to PDF, Edit, Redact, Protect, Unlock and Chat with PDF. Your file travels over HTTPS to our server on AWS in the Paris region (eu-west-3), where it is processed, then deleted as soon as the task ends.
- Edit sends a PDF of up to 4 MB in full when it opens, then again after each change, so that it can detect and rewrite text blocks; a larger PDF is not sent.
- Word to PDF, Protect PDF, Unlock PDF and, in some cases, PDF to Word write a temporary copy of the file on the server during the task and delete it right after.
- Chat with PDF sends the extracted text back to your tab, which keeps it with the conversation and sends both with each question; the server keeps neither once it has answered. The text and your questions are processed by a Claude model from Anthropic through Amazon Bedrock.
- Server logs record technical messages, such as errors; the code does not write your documents or passwords to them.
- Nothing is saved to an account or a file history: keep the file you download, because once you reload the page ProPDF has no copy to give back.
Cookies and what your browser remembers
The server keeps no copy of your files or their content, and that includes the text and the conversation of Chat with PDF. With your consent, audience-measurement cookies (Google Analytics) are set; if you decline, they are not set. Each download also sends Google Analytics an event with the tool name, the file extension and the file size, never the file name or the content. There are no ads on the site.
Your cookie choice is stored in your browser, and you can change it at any time with the Manage cookies button in the footer. The site also saves your language in your browser's storage and in a preference cookie, so it can open in that language next time, and it remembers whether you switched to light or dark mode.
Hosting and technology
ProPDF is hosted on AWS. The server tools run in the Paris region (eu-west-3), and the chat assistant uses Amazon Bedrock with a European inference profile.
In the browser, PDF files are displayed with PDF.js and assembled with pdf-lib, two open-source libraries. On the server, PyMuPDF handles compression, redaction, text editing, PDF to Word and the text extraction for the chat; pikepdf adds and removes passwords; LibreOffice converts Word documents to PDF.
Files made by the browser tools carry no ProPDF mark. PDFs they save with pdf-lib name that library as the producer, its default setting.
Six languages
ProPDF is available in English, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese and Russian. Every page exists in each language at its own address, and the footer links to the same page in the other five.
Features ProPDF does not offer
- No OCR: scanned pages are images, so PDF to Word, Compare PDF and Chat with PDF cannot read their text.
- No certified signatures: Sign PDF places an image of your signature, with no certificate or timestamp.
- No desktop or mobile app, no public API and no cloud storage.
- No automatic detection in Redact PDF: you draw each area to remove by hand.
- No form filling: Edit PDF can tick boxes with an X and place a signature on a form, but it does not fill the form fields or add text in an empty area.
- One file at a time in most tools: Merge PDF and JPG to PDF accept several files, and Compare PDF takes two.
