Compare ProPDF with Competitors

Criteria and sourced facts to compare ProPDF with other PDF tools

Each comparison below puts ProPDF next to one PDF service, row by row, with that service's pros and cons and a verdict. Competitor facts come from each vendor's own public pages, read in September 2026, and are attributed to the vendor.

You will find no prices or ratings there: prices change often and ratings are hard to verify. What you will find, stated plainly, is what ProPDF lacks, such as OCR, desktop and mobile apps, conversions to Excel or PowerPoint, and signature requests with tracking.

Seven criteria for comparing PDF tools

  • Where files are processed: on your device or on a server, and in which region. At ProPDF, 13 of the 21 tools run in your browser and the other eight use a server in Paris.
  • Account: whether you must sign up before you use a tool, or only for some features.
  • Limits on free use: daily quotas, file size caps, and the tools a free plan leaves out.
  • OCR: whether scanned pages can become searchable text. ProPDF has none, so its text tools need a PDF with real text.
  • Apps: desktop and mobile apps, and whether you can work without an internet connection.
  • Signatures: a visual signature that you place yourself, or requests sent to others with tracking and a certificate.
  • Languages: the languages the interface is offered in. ProPDF's are English, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese and Russian.

What the four comparisons cover

  • iLovePDF: the Basic, Premium and Business plans, the desktop and mobile apps listed for Premium and Business, OCR, iLoveSign and custom workflows.
  • Smallpdf: what Smallpdf lists for its Pro plan, from text editing and OCR to office conversions and signature requests, and which of those tasks ProPDF covers for free.
  • Adobe Acrobat: the free Acrobat Reader for viewing, annotating and signing, the Standard or Pro subscription that editing requires, and the OCR, redaction and comparison features Adobe lists for Acrobat Pro and Studio.
  • PDF24: two free services side by side, with PDF24's advertising and server-side online tools as PDF24 describes them, its Windows desktop app, and OCR.

How to read a comparison

Start with the table rows that match your work, then read the pros and cons. A feature listed on a paid plan may be missing from the free one, so note which plan each cell refers to.

Vendors change plans and features often, so treat each comparison as a snapshot of September 2026. Before you commit to a tool, check its pricing page for the current details.

The ProPDF side of every table

The ProPDF column stays the same from one comparison to the next. All 21 tools are free, with no account and no daily quota, and no page shows ads. The only counter is in Chat with PDF, which allows 50 messages per conversation, answers included.

Signatures are visual only, drawn, typed or imported, with no certificate or audit trail. The eight server tools accept files up to 4 MB, while the browser tools depend only on your device's memory.
