Adobe Acrobat vs ProPDF: Reader, Paid Plans and Free Browser Tools
Adobe Acrobat comes as the free Acrobat Reader and four paid plans: Acrobat Express, Standard, Pro and Studio. ProPDF is a set of 21 free PDF tools that you use in a web browser, with no account and no subscription. This comparison of Adobe Acrobat vs ProPDF goes feature by feature, including the places where ProPDF stops.

Adobe Acrobat: Limits and Conditions

- Acrobat Standard leaves out the enhanced PDF tools and e-signature capabilities that Adobe adds in Pro
Reader, Standard or Pro: where ProPDF fits
If you only read, comment on and sign PDFs, the free Acrobat Reader may already cover you. ProPDF is aimed at the next step, changing the document itself.
Editing text, redacting and comparing two versions are free in ProPDF, while Adobe places them in its paid plans. ProPDF has no OCR, though, and its editor only changes text that is already on the page, rewriting it in Helvetica, Times or Courier, where letters outside Western European Latin, such as Cyrillic, come out as a dot, and it cannot swap or crop images.
Most ProPDF tools run on your device. Text editing, redaction, compression, Word conversions, passwords and the chat send the file over HTTPS to our server in Paris, where it is processed, then deleted as soon as the task ends. The chat keeps the document text and the conversation in your tab and sends them with each question; the server keeps neither once it has answered.
Which one suits the file in front of you
Start from the document you have and the job it needs.
- A scanned contract or receipt: Acrobat Pro, which turns scans into searchable text. ProPDF has no OCR, so its text tools cannot read a scan.
- A spreadsheet or slide deck to convert: Acrobat Pro handles Excel and PowerPoint, and ProPDF converts Word files only.
- A document other people must sign: Acrobat Pro sends signature requests and tracks them. ProPDF places your own visual signature, with no certificate, timestamp or audit trail.
- A typo or an outdated date in a digital PDF: Edit PDF in ProPDF, free, for files up to 4 MB.
- Names or account numbers to hide before sharing: Redact PDF removes the text under each rectangle you draw, with the form fields, comments and links under it, so none of that text is left there to see, select or copy. The document title and author, bookmarks and the files attached to the document stay in the file: check them, and the lines next to each rectangle, before you share. The accessibility tags of a tagged PDF lose the redacted text too, except in rare cases.
- Two drafts of the same contract: Compare PDF shows removed, added and changed words in color, as long as both files are digital. It compares sets of words, so a change in word order can go unnoticed: check the documents too.
- Comments and sticky notes for a reviewer: the free Acrobat Reader, since ProPDF has no comment tools.
Which One to Choose
Choose Adobe Acrobat when you need OCR for scans, Excel or PowerPoint conversion, signature requests with reminders, image editing or an app on your computer or phone; for reading and commenting only, the free Reader may be enough. Choose ProPDF when you want to edit existing text, redact, compare, compress or convert Word files in a browser for free, with no account, within its limits: no OCR, so text tools need a PDF with real text, and 4 MB for the server tools.
