A Free Adobe Acrobat Alternative for Everyday PDF Work

Looking for an Adobe Acrobat alternative that edits PDFs, not just opens them? ProPDF gives you 21 PDF tools in a web browser for free: nothing to install, no account and no subscription. This page covers what it can take over from Acrobat, what it cannot, and what happens to your files.

It is written for two kinds of readers: people using the free Acrobat Reader who find that it cannot change text, and people looking for a free alternative to Adobe Acrobat Pro for occasional edits, redactions or comparisons. Adobe facts are quoted from its own pages as read in September 2026.

Why choose ProPDF

  • No plan to pick and no payment step: all 21 tools are free
  • Nothing to install: the tools open in your web browser
  • No account or sign-up
  • Text editing, redaction and version comparison at no cost
  • Most tools work on the file directly in your browser, with no upload to wait for
  • No watermark on your files

Key features

Edit text without a paid plan

Select a text block in Edit PDF and type the new wording: the old text is removed from the page letter by letter, keeping the background, and yours is written in Helvetica, Times or Courier, at a size from 4 to 72, in one of five preset colors or any color you pick, with Latin letters and common Western European accents only: other letters, such as Cyrillic ones, come out as a dot. Search and replace changes all occurrences by default, and undo and redo let you step back.

Redaction you draw yourself

Redact PDF lets you draw rectangles over the parts to hide, page by page, filled in black or another color. Applying it removes the text beneath each box from the page instead of just covering it, so none of that text is left beneath the box to see, select or copy, and it removes the form fields, comments and links under a box too. The result downloads as a new file ending in _redacted.pdf.

Two versions, side by side

Compare PDF opens two PDFs in your browser and marks the word differences in text mode: red for removed, green for added and yellow for changed. It compares sets of words, so a change in word order can go unnoticed. The visual mode places the pages next to each other so you can check the layout by eye.

A password to open the file

Protect PDF encrypts the file with AES-256, and the password must be entered to open it. There are no permission settings to choose, and printing stays allowed. If you know the password, Unlock PDF removes it again.

Need an Adobe Reader alternative?

Adobe describes Acrobat Reader as free to download and use without a subscription, for viewing, commenting on and signing PDFs. For reading alone, you may not need an extra app at all: Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari display PDFs on their own.

Changing the content is another matter. According to Adobe, text and image editing is not available in Acrobat Reader and requires an Acrobat Standard or Acrobat Pro subscription. Edit PDF covers part of that gap for free.

Its limits are worth knowing. You can rewrite existing text but not add a new text box in a blank area, and the new wording uses a standard font rather than the original one. Editing works on digital PDFs up to 4 MB: the whole document goes to our Paris server when you open it and again after each change, where it is processed, then deleted as soon as the task ends.

Acrobat Pro tasks you can do for free

Adobe lists the tasks below for Acrobat Pro. Each one has a free ProPDF counterpart, described here with its scope.

  • Fixing typos: Edit PDF, for digital PDFs, with a choice of three standard fonts.
  • Converting to and from Word: PDF to Word turns a digital PDF into a .docx laid out close to the original pages. Word to PDF converts .docx, .doc, .odt and .rtf files with LibreOffice. Check fonts and line breaks after conversion.
  • Redacting sensitive content: Redact PDF. Nothing is found for you, since there is no search or automatic detection. Form fields, comments and links under a box are removed with the text, while the document title and author, bookmarks and the files attached to the document stay in the file, and the accessibility tags of a tagged PDF lose the redacted text too, except in rare cases.
  • Comparing versions: Compare PDF matches pages by number, so an inserted page shifts everything after it. Its Text mode needs PDFs with real text; for scans, the Visual mode shows the pages side by side.
  • Adding a password: Protect PDF sets a password to open the file, without the permission controls Adobe lists.

What ProPDF cannot replace in Acrobat Pro

Some Acrobat features have no ProPDF equivalent. If your work depends on one of them, ProPDF cannot take over that job.

  • OCR: Adobe lists turning scans into searchable, editable PDFs, and ProPDF cannot read text from a scan.
  • Excel and PowerPoint conversion, which ProPDF lacks: Word is its only office format.
  • Signature requests: Acrobat Pro sends documents out for e-signature and tracks their status. A ProPDF signature is an image you place yourself, without a certificate, timestamp or audit trail.
  • Image editing: Edit PDF can place an image through its signature panel, but it cannot swap or crop the images already on the page.
  • Review tools: ProPDF has no comments, highlights or sticky notes, which Reader offers for free.
  • Forms: ProPDF cannot type into form fields. Edit PDF adds X marks and a signature to a form, but no new text in a blank spot.
  • Apps: there is no desktop or mobile app, only the website.

Where your files go on ProPDF

In 13 of the 21 tools, including Sign PDF, Compare PDF, Merge PDF and Split a PDF, the file stays on your device and is not sent anywhere.

The other eight, among them Edit PDF, Redact PDF and Compress a PDF, send the file over HTTPS to our AWS server in the Paris region (eu-west-3). It is processed there, then deleted as soon as the task ends, and these server tools accept files up to 4 MB.

Chat with PDF works a little differently: your tab keeps the document's text and the conversation and sends them with each question, and the server keeps neither once it has answered. Its answers come from Claude (Anthropic) through Amazon Bedrock, with a European inference profile.

No subscription to manage

Adobe's pricing page lists Acrobat Express, Standard, Pro and Studio as its four paid plans. Its FAQ says you pay a monthly or annual fee based on the plan you choose, and a free trial button appears for Express, Pro and Studio.

ProPDF has no plans, no trial and no payment step. The trade-off is scope: no OCR, no image editing, no signature requests, and the limits listed above.

Which One to Choose

ProPDF works as a free Adobe Acrobat alternative for jobs such as editing existing text, redacting, comparing drafts, compressing or converting Word files, within 4 MB for the server tools. Keep Acrobat for OCR, Excel or PowerPoint conversion, signature requests and image editing, and the free Reader if you want review comments or an app on your computer or phone.
