Free PDF Tool Alternatives

Free PDF tools with no account, and when you need something else

Each page below takes one PDF product and shows how to do the same everyday work with ProPDF for free: which ProPDF tool fits each task and what it cannot do.

Before you replace anything, check what you already have. As of September 2026, modern browsers such as Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari open and display PDF files. Microsoft Word can open a PDF and convert it into an editable document, though the layout may change. On a Mac, Preview can add text and signatures to a PDF.

When a free browser tool is enough

ProPDF asks for no account and has no daily quota. Its 13 browser tools keep the file on your device, while its eight server tools process it in Paris and delete it when the task ends; the chat keeps the document text and the conversation in your tab, not on the server. It covers jobs like these:

  • Joining, splitting, reordering or rotating pages, at any size your device can handle.
  • Turning images into a PDF, or pages into JPG or PNG images.
  • Adding page numbers, a watermark or your own visual signature.
  • Shrinking, converting to or from Word, protecting, unlocking or redacting files of up to 4 MB.
  • Asking questions about a digital PDF, or getting a summary of it.

Tasks that need another tool

  • Scanned documents: making them searchable takes OCR, which ProPDF does not have.
  • Signature requests: sending a document to other people and tracking who has signed takes an e-signature service.
  • Forms: filling in form fields or creating fillable forms. On a Mac, Preview can fill in form fields.
  • Spreadsheets and slides: converting a PDF to Excel or PowerPoint.
  • Rich editing: adding new text anywhere on a page, shapes, freehand drawing, highlighting, or changing the images already on a page.
  • No internet connection: ProPDF needs one, so you need an installed app.
  • Large files on server tasks: ProPDF's server tools, such as compression, Word conversions, text editing and the chat, accept files up to 4 MB.

Using a free tool next to a paid one

You do not have to pick one tool for everything. You can keep a paid suite or an app for OCR or signature requests and use a free browser tool for quick jobs such as merging or adding page numbers.

For example, you might keep an app that makes scans searchable, then use ProPDF to merge the results with other PDFs and number the pages before you send them.

The four alternative pages show, for each product, which tasks ProPDF covers and which it does not.
