Your files are not kept
Of the 21 tools, 13 work inside your browser and send your file nowhere. The other 8 process it on our server in Paris and delete it when the task ends; the chat keeps the document text and the conversation in your tab, not on the server.
Fast, nothing to install
Most tools process the file directly in your browser, so there is no upload to wait for. A web browser is all you need: no app and no plug-in.

No sign-up, no subscription, no daily quota and no watermark on your files. Browser tools have no file size cap; server tools accept files up to 4 MB.
Where each tool processes your file
ProPDF gathers 21 free PDF tools online in one place, and each tool page tells you where your file goes. Of these, 13 run entirely in your browser: the file is processed on your device and sent nowhere. The other 8 send it over HTTPS to our server on AWS in the Paris region (eu-west-3), where it is processed, then deleted as soon as the task ends.
- In your browser: Merge, Split, Organize, Rotate, Delete Pages, Extract Pages, PDF to JPG, PDF to PNG, JPG to PDF, Watermark, Page Numbers, Sign and Compare.
- On the server: Compress, PDF to Word, Word to PDF, Edit, Redact, Protect, Unlock and Chat with PDF.
- Edit sends a PDF of up to 4 MB in full to the server when it opens and again after each change; a larger PDF is not sent.
- Some server tools, including Word to PDF, Protect and Unlock, write a temporary copy of the file during the task and delete it right after.
- Chat with PDF keeps the document text and the conversation in your tab and sends them with each question; the server keeps neither once it has answered.
What is free, and the limits to know
Every tool is free, with no account, no subscription and no daily quota, and the files you download carry no ProPDF watermark.
The limits depend on where a tool runs. A browser tool has no file size cap: only your device's memory matters. A server tool accepts files up to 4 MB, and a request that takes more than 30 seconds fails; Split a PDF, which runs in your browser, can cut a large file into smaller parts first.
Chat with PDF has its own limits: 500 pages, 50 messages per conversation and 4,000 characters per question. Past about 280,000 characters of text (70,000 in Chinese, Japanese or Korean), only the pages that fit in the first 240,000 (60,000 in those languages) are read.
Pass a result from one tool to the next
After most tools, a "File ready" panel appears, where "Continue with" suggests up to four next tools. The result is downloaded, and it also stays open in the page, so the next tool can use it without you picking the file again.
Only PDF results can be passed on, and the handoff lives in the page's memory: reloading the page clears it, so keep the downloaded copy. When the next step is a server tool, the file is sent to the Paris server like any other upload.
A typical chain: merge several PDFs, compress the merged file, sign it, then protect it with a password.
What ProPDF does not do
- No OCR: the text of a scan or a photo of a page cannot be edited, compared word by word or read by Chat with PDF. PDF to Word keeps scanned pages as images, and Compare can show scans side by side in its Visual mode.
- Signatures are visual: an image placed on the page, with no certificate, timestamp or audit trail.
- No desktop or mobile app and no public API: everything happens on the website.
- No account and no file history: download each result, because nothing is saved for later.
Languages and finding a tool
The site is available in six languages: English, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese and Russian. Each language has its own address, and the language menu in the header opens the same page in the language you pick. Chat with PDF answers in the language of your question.
